Please take the time to have a look at our new folding flame cane.

This has been aimed at a younger market of walking stick users. It is available in four colour combinations. the most popular being the red and yellow flames but it is also available in blue, green or purple.

I think we should rename it the hot rod cane, as it seems very popular with bikers and motor enthusiasts.

We do make a rigid version of this cane with a derby handle and we can make it with a crutch handle if required. The folding derby flame cane, is practical, as it can be folded away in the pocket of a car or laptop bag etc. which is ideal for students who need a walking aid.

We have made the cane a very competitive price and as we make this ourselves we use only the best walking stick components.

A pair of walking sticks once owned by legendary Scots entertainer Sir Harry Lauder have gone on display ahead of an auction next week.

The two crooked briar walking sticks were taken all over the world by the kilt-clad music hall star at the height of his fame.

They are thought to have been crafted in the late 19th Century and Sir Harry used them until his death in 1950.

The sticks were bought by entertainer Jimmy Logan in 1966.

Both sticks are contained in a case, with the inscription: “Sir Harry Lauder’s crooked sticks (famous Scottish Minstrel 1870 – 1950) acquired by Jimmy Logan OBE from Lauder Ha’ 1966″.

Valued at between £800 and £1,200, they will be sold by Lyon and Turnbull auctioneers on Wednesday.

‘Very distinctive’

Victoria Crake, antiques director for Lyon and Turnbull, said: “We’re expecting interest from buyers who are interested in music hall and interested in Harry Lauder. But it is also possible that walking stick collectors will be interested.

“They are very distinctive, and were something of a trademark for Harry Lauder and are very associated with him specifically.

“They were probably made in the late 19th century, although we don’t know if they were made specifically for him. However, we do know that he was given walking sticks by people who came across him.”

Sir Harry, born in Portobello in Edinburgh, worked in a flax mill and coal mine to support his family before crafting out a career in showbusiness, writing famous tunes such as Roamin in the Gloamin’ and I Love a Lassie.

He performed before King Edward VII in 1908 and appeared in the United States 25 times between 1909 and 1932.

In the UK and British Isles, it can grow to a height of approx 12 to 15 feet and has been grown for centuries as a coppice crop.

Once seen, the bark is easily recognised again, as is the shape of the bush, with new shoots being thrown up from the stem base. In early spring, the characteristic catkins or lambs tails, which are the male flowers, can be seen with the smaller bud of the female flower close to the twig, marked with red tassels.

The bark colour of Hazel can vary greatly, especially in younger growth. It can range from a deep dark brown, to mottled beige to an almost silver sheen….

Hazel shank

Hazel is arguably the most common wood used in making walking sticks, as it is strong and fairly light and it grows in such a way that it needs very little straightening.
Hazel is the favoured wood of water diviners and is purported to have magical properties that can protect your house from lightning strikes. It is also a symbol of fire and fertility.
